Performed artistically for the first time

𝙔𝙖 𝙬𝙖𝙡𝙖𝙙 𝙮𝙖 𝙢𝙞𝙨𝙝𝙧𝙚𝙦𝙞 –  from 1950 to 2026 I

n the 1950s, German ethnomusicologist 𝗘𝘀𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗚𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻-𝗞𝗶𝘄𝗶 roamed Israel’s immigrant camps.

Armed with bulky recording gear and a mission to preserve Jewish heritage, she captured voices that might have otherwise been lost to history.

In one of those camps, she met two Yemeni teenagers, 𝗡𝗮𝗼𝗺𝗶 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗬𝗼𝗻𝗮 𝗕𝗮𝗱𝗵𝗶𝗵𝗶 . They sang a delicate love song for her- raw, authentic, and beautiful.

For nearly 80 years, that recording sat silently in the archives of the National Library of Israel. It was never performed, never arranged, and never heard by the public. 𝗨𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗹 𝗻𝗼𝘄.

As descendants of Yemenite Jews in the 21st century, we felt a deep responsibility to bring this fragment of the past back to life. We listened to the original archival recording, drawing from its “crystalline authenticity,” and infused it with our own modern sound and spirit.
